Does it make sense that eating lots of fish or use solid doses of fish oil every day, may influence brain functioning and behavior?
Through all ages, fish has been considered “brain food”, but only the last 20-30 years have we started to understand why. The answer is related to special molecules only found in breast milk and fish, called the omega-3 family. These molecules have a unique flexible structure making them indispensable to all cell-lives whether it is in birds, dogs, horses or humans. They simply help holding the cell membranes together, attaching cites for hormones and neuropeptides and other signal substances, regulate the passage of nutrients into the cells and the getting rid of waste products. If for some reason the body does not have the right balance of omega-3 or too little, other less competent molecules will try to fulfill the job.
